INCA WINS AUTOMOTIVE SALVAGE CONTRACT FOR BROKEN CARBIDE TOOLING IN ENGINE BLOCK PRODUCTION

Batches of 200 engine cylinder blocks are being delivered to Inca Geometric’s Chartham, Nr Canterbury facility as part of a reclamation contract won by the company to remove broken solid carbide taps, re-tap the offending threaded hole and return the blocks to the automotive manufacturer’s production line.

Inca has incorporated an indexing fixture which will present any face of the engine block to the spindle of a radial drill which carries a range of hollow carbon tube electrodes. The tube is connected to a metal disintegrator unit which provides the power and coolant supply to burn out the centre of the broken carbide tool using a series of intermittent electric arcs.

There is a range of different engines that Inca is salvaging where taps between 6 mm and 12 mm plus BSP pipe threads are removed. In the process, the solid centre of the tap is burned out, rather like the core of an apple, allowing the flutes of the tap to be easily removed. Each thread position is then re-tapped and checked before being returned to the customer.
