A competitively priced pneumatically controlled mechanical indexing unit has been developed by Inca Geometric as a self-contained unit that can be tailored to suit bespoke positioning operations.

The device was an original concept produced as part of an axle assembly machine developed by Inca engineers for inserting up to 10 wheel studs in a series of different hub specifications. The mechanism incorporated a quick-change index plate to suit the different combinations of hub and stud arrangement and is able to support press loads of up to five tonnes.

The unit requires only an airline connection and can also be integrated into or activated from a CNC or PLC control. Accuracy is within 0.1 mm TIR against mechanical stops while the addition of shotpin type location mechanism will provide higher orders of accuracy and enhance the rigidity of the unit for off-centre type production sequences.

The index table can be up to 450 mm diameter and the whole assembly base is 700 mm by 600 mm. Meanwhile the unit is compact requiring just 150 mm overall height and can be fitted with an enclosure to prevent ingress of swarf in machining operations.

With Inca’s design and manufacture capability and specialist build experience in special purpose equipment, assembly and test cells, the basic index unit can be further developed to provide indexing and positioning in both horizontal and vertical applications.
